80 injured in clashes in Kashmir

6 Jun 2009,

SRINAGAR: Police fired warning shots and resorted to lathicarge to control protesters who gathered at the Shopian main chowk and other city centres after Friday prayers shouting anti-India slogans. Over 80 people were injured, 30 alone at the main chowk, in clashes between police and protesters.

The protests were prompted by the alleged rape and murder of Neelofar Jan, 22, and her sister-in-law Asiya Jan, 17, on Saturday. Their bodies were found in a field near their house at Bongam Shopian.

Friday's incidents immediately led to the protesters announcing a boycott of selling goods to the security forces.

At least 15 people were injured when police and paramilitary CRPF used force to quell protests near Seno Shermal in Shopian. Police and CRPF fired teargas shells and opened fire in air to disperse them. Police said they came under heavy brickbatting.

Soon after the incidents, the administration deployed thousands of police and CRPF personnel, armed with riot gear across the valley.

Shops, educational institutions and government offices remained closed and vehicles were off the roads on Friday as the valley staged protests against the rape and murder.

In the old city, thousands of people took out a protest rally from the historic Jamia Masjid. There were stone-pelting in Sakidafar, Khaniyar, Kawadara, Safakadal, Mahraj Gunj. At least 20 people were injured in clashes here.
