We are on the verge of an economic collapse ?

'Inevitable' a country will exit euro, says George Soros

Billionaire investor George Soros thinks a country will eventually exit the euro zone and urged policymakers on Sunday to come up with a "plan B" that could rescue the European Union from looming economic collapse.

Soros, famous for making USD 1 billion by betting against the British pound in 1992, did not name any country he thought might exit the currency, but speculation is mounting about the fate of Greece as its politicians struggle to agree more austerity measures demanded by international lenders as the price for staving off bankruptcy.

Soros reiterated his view in a panel discussion in Vienna that the euro had a basic flaw from the start in that the currency was not backed by political union or a joint treasury.

"The euro had no provision for correction. There was no arrangement for any country leaving the euro, which in the current circumstances is probably inevitable," he said.

While he called survival of the European Union a "vital interest to all", he said the EU needed structural changes to halt a process of disintegration.

"There is no plan B at the moment. That is why the authorities are sticking to the status quo and insisting on preserving the existing arrangements instead of recognising there are fundamental flaws that need to be corrected."

With a debt crisis in some peripheral members testing the EU's cohesiveness at a time of popular disquiet in wealthier countries over bailouts, he said leaders had to adopt measures now to remedy the situation.

"Let's face it: we are on the verge of an economic collapse which starts, let's say, in Greece but could easily spread. The financial system remains extremely vulnerable...

"We are on the edge of collapse and that is the time to recognise the need for change."

Some steps the EU could adopt included creating a larger central budget; directing some of the income from value-added tax or a levy on financial transactions to Brussels; having a European institution guarantee banks, and tripling the size of its bailout fund by topping it up with tax revenue, he said.

Digvijay Singh 'disowns' statement on Anna Hazare

Barely a day after he virtually warned anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare on his proposed fast, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh today did a volte-face saying he never meant that Hazare would also be given the same treatment that had been meted out to Baba Ramdev.

"I am surprised and pained at reports in today's newspapers which quoted me as saying that the treatment given to Ramdev would also be meted out to Anna Hazare," the Congress General Secretary told PTI.

Singh said that during his interaction with reporters yesterday in Jabalpur what he said was that the Congress had nothing to do with the manner in which either Hazare or Baba Ramdev be treated.

He said Congress party had nothing to do how the two were treated as it is always decided by the local administration after assessing the prevailing situation at that moment.

The outspoken leader maintained that if there was a need for holding a fast, the younger activists of civil society like Arvind Kejriwal or Prashant Bhushan should do it instead of Hazare.

TDP demands arrest of two members of Sai Trust

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party has demanded that the two members of the Satya Sai Central Trust be arrested immediately in connection with seizure of huge cash that was allegedly being diverted from Prasanthi Nilayam, the abode of late Satya Sai Baba.

Seeking arrest of Venu Srinivasan and R J Ratnakar, the TDP also demanded an enquiry by a Supreme Court judge in the diversion of treasure from the Trust and the involvement of some political leaders into it.

The main opposition party in Andhra Pradesh also pointed out that there were doubts in the minds of devotees about involvement of a state minister and the son of a Union minister in the illegal diversion of Trust funds.

In a statement here today, senior TDP leader and the Leader of Opposition in Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council, Dadi Veerabhadra Rao, held chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy responsible for the 'murky' happenings at the Trust by remaining a mute spectator even as the reports suggested that huge cash, diamonds and other valuables were being clandestinely moved out of Yajur Mandir, the private chambers of Satya Sai Baba since he was hospitalised on March 28.

That huge amounts of cash secretly moved to other states became clear with the finding of only Rs 12 crore when an inventory was taken in the Yajur Mandir last week, he pointed out.

"While Ratnakar claimed that Rs 35 lakh seized from a car did not belong to the Trust, the Anantapur district SP asserted that the money indeed belonged to the Trust. The money was in fact seized from the driver of Venu Srinivasan of the TVS group. Why is the government not arresting Srinivasan, Ratnakar and the chief security officer of Prasanthi Nilayam in connection with the case," questioned Veerabhadra Rao.

Alleging that some state ministers were exerting pressure on chief minister from taking any action against the errant Trust members, Rao demanded that Kiran Kumar Reddy reveal their names.

"The happenings in the Satya Sai Central Trust are damaging the image of Andhra Pradesh internationally. The Chief Minister should take the blame for this as he failed to take necessary action at the right time," Rao said.

The police in Anantapur district had seized Rs 35 lakh in cash that was being transported in a vehicle, allegedly belonging to the Sathya Sai Central Trust, and detained the vehicle's driver near Karnataka border on the night of June 18.

Govt trying to bring jokepal bill: Anna hazare to Fast

New Delhi: Veteran Gandhian Anna Hazare and his supporters challenged the Central Government to crush their anti-corruption crusade while reiterating their stand that another fast-unto-death will be launched from August 16 if Parliament did not pass the Lokpal Bill by then.

Accusing the Government of not being keen on fighting corruption, Hazare said, "The Government forcibly broke the fast of Baba Ramdev. I am not scared of anything like this. I am ready to face lathicharge. I am going to begin my fast again at Jantar Mantar from August 16 onwards."
He claimed that the seven meetings of the 10-member Lokpal Bill drafting committee were a waste of time.

"It was a waste of time. It is very clear that the Government does not have any intention of removing corruption from the country. Till now, the Government was asking for our suggestations but all of sudden, it took a U-turn and now they will putting two versions before the Cabinet. What was the point in making a joint Lokpal panel. Two drafts were avaliable earlier too. The Government would have presented two drafts earlier. It shows the Government is not serious in eradicating corruption. I will resume fast from August 16. I will fight till my last breath for the society," he said.
"Yesterday's decision by the Government is not good for the people of the country," he said while referring to the Lokpal Bill drafting committee the Government and the civil society members failed to arrive at a consensus and decided to present two drafts to the Union Cabinet.

Hazare supporter and Lokpal Bill drafting committee members Arvind Kejriwal accused the Government of ignoring the proposals put forward by the civil society.

"The Government will bulldoze its own bill. It is not going to be a Lokpal but a jokepal bill," said Kejriwal.

"Political parties will not be allowed to share stage, they can sit amongst the public. If Section 144 is imposed, then we will go to jail," said Hazare.

The BJP had put up a big show of solidarity with the yoga icon Ramdev

Dehradun: BJP leader Uma Bharti met Baba Ramdev for the second time on Sunday night after he broke his fast on the ninth day. Uma was re-inducted into the BJP last week.

"Baba's aide confirmed he had juice and broke his fast, he had fruits... when I went to meet him, he was sleeping. Doctors are saying that he is recovering," she said.

Uma Bharti, who has been asked to help revive the BJP in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the state's elections next year, met the yoga icon at the Himalayan Hospital in Dehradun for the second time on Sunday.

Baba Ramdev ended his hunger-strike on Sunday. The breakthrough came after a galaxy of religious and political leaders met him at the Himalayan Hospital in Dehradun and convinced him to end his fast.

The BJP had put up a big show of solidarity with the yoga icon. While he was still fasting, the party had asked the Centre to intervene and said that any untoward turn in the yoga teacher's health could become a national issue.

Many NDA leaders like Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and former Haryana Chief Minister and INLD leader Om Prakash Chautala also met Baba Ramdev at the hospital to talk him out of the fast.

CBI builds case against Dayanidhi Maran

New Delhi: Dayanidhi Maran's alleged transgressions when he was Telecom Minister can be traced to how he awarded licences to companies for mobile networks. This is what the CBI believes. The agency, which is investigating India's Godzilla-sized Telecom Scam, has been following up on allegations that Mr Maran misused his term from 2004 to 2007 to help companies he favoured.

To prove its case, the CBI will explain how Mr Maran broke with the norms of the country's telecom policy in sanctioning licences.

Before Mr Maran took office, 27 licences had been processed within months. Airtel, for example, got its licence within three months when the BJP-led NDA was in power at the centre. In contrast, after Mr Maran took over, phone operator Aircel was kept waiting for two years for the 14 licences it had applied for. Then owner of Aircel, C Sivasankaran has testified to the CBI that Mr Maran threatened and pressured him to sell his company to an entrepreneur in Malaysia who was close to the Maran family. Mr Sivasankaran claims he sold Aircel at a throwaway price to T Ananda Krishnan in late 2005. The licences were granted as quickly as within a month, for some circles or areas.

A company owned by Mr Anandakrishnan then invested 800 crores in Sun TV, owned by Mr Maran's brother. The CBI will determine if this was a kickback for the Aircel deal.

While Mr Sivasankaran was put on hold, Mr Maran was efficient in clearing the licences that Anil Ambani's Reliance Infocomm and Sunil Mittal's Bharti wanted.

Sources in the CBI say that proof of Mr Maran's bias against Mr Sivasankaran can be seen in certain circles like Madhya Pradesh - here, even though the government had given the businessman a Letter of Intent to indicate his licences would be granted, he was made to wait for two years. So while the government had agreed in principal to his request, it did not allow his files to be processed. The licences were sanctioned only after Mr Anandakrishnan bought the company.

Chidambaram, Maran continuance unfortunate: BJP

Patna, Jun 9 (PTI) BJP lashed out at the UPA government at the Centre on the issue of corruption today saying it was 'unfortunate' that Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and Textile Minister Dayanidhi Maran continued to be ministers despite their name cropping up in the 2G spectrum case. Seeking to corner the UPA government on the twin issues of corruption and bringing back blackmoney stashed abroad, BJP General Secretary Dharmendra Pradhan said the decision on allocation of 2G spectrum was taken when Chidambaram was Union Finance Minister. The Public Accounts Committee in its draft report in April this year had questioned the role of the finance ministry, including then finance minister P Chidambaram, in the 2G spectrum scam. "The former owner of Aircel has told CBI that Maran, who was earlier the telecome minister, had threatened to eliminate him. But Maran is still continuing as minister," Pradhan said. However, Suresh Kalmadi, chairman of the CWG organising committee and A Raja, the Union Telecom minister in the UPA II government were asked to resign on issues relating to the irregularities in organising the Commonwealth Games 2010 and 2G spectrum scam respectively, he added. Yesterday in an interview to a TV channel, BJP chief Nitin Gadkari's said that he has evidence against Chidambaram for his alleged involvement in 2G spectrum scam.

RSS not behind Baba Ramdev’s agitation - Mohan Bhavath

New Delhi, June 7: RSS chief Mohanrao Bhagwat has clarified that his organisation is not behind Baba Ramdev’s agitation although it had supported it.

“(The) Sangh is doing the work of social transformation,” a release issued by the media cell quoted Bhagwat as telling swayamsevaks at the RSS’s Nagpur headquarters. “It does not want anything else. It is not concerned with whom the power rests.”

The statement has been construed as a “straightforward reply” to the allegation that the Sangh instigated Ramdev’s protest.

Manmohan Vaidya, who heads the media cell, said: “Twice, this charge was levelled against us. Once, when Anna Hazare and his colleagues protested (at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar), and now. The Sangh has no political agenda, it is concerned about corruption because it affects society as a whole.”

Vaidya said the RSS had adopted a resolution at its delegates’ convention last March that it would offer “constructive cooperation” to non-political movements against corruption. “Hazare and Ramdevji fit this characterisation,” he added.

UPA most corrupt Govt. in history of independent India: Advani

New Delhi, June 6: Stating the Congress-led UPA Government is trying to crush the people's movement led by yoga guru Baba Ramdev, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) veteran Lal Krishna Advani on Monday said this is the most corrupt government in the history of independent India.

Advani, who led a BJP delegation to President Pratibha Devisingh Patil at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here on Monday, after the meeting said: "Because of our efforts corruption has become an issue that is being discussed in every corner of the country and this is the most corrupt government in the history of independent India."

He further suggested that India should adopt the method what foreign countries - Germany and America - have followed to bring back the black money stashed in Swiss banks.

"The problem of India will be resolved if the entire resources are fused together alike Germany and America have adopted the methods to bring back the black money stashed in Swiss bank or other such tax havens," he said.

Further charging the UPA Government, Advani said: "Parliament means President, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and that is why we say that we came to the President to discuss the issues whether it is of corruption or black money stashed in overseas accounts or if someone peacefully begins an indefinite hunger strike to bring back the black money stashed overseas accounts, then his thousands of followers including women and children, supported his this move by singing religious songs. But police suddenly go and attack them."

Senior BJP leaders met President Patil on Monday and demanded the convening of a special session of Parliament to discuss the crisis that has arisen from the confrontation between the government on one hand and civil society activists including Baba Ramdev on the other.

Terming the government crackdown on yoga guru Baba Ramdev similar to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, Advani on Sunday said: "I feel this is political fascism. I want the president to take cognisance of the happenings in the country for the past six months and convene an emergency session of Parliament."

The BJP leaders led by Advani and president Nitin Gadkari staged a protest at Mahatma Gandhi's memorial Rajghat on Sunday night.

"It is an attack on democracy . It reminds of 1975 when the government became dictatorial.

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday termed as "undemocratic" the police action to break up the anti-corruption hunger strike launched by Baba Ramdev and thousands of his supporters here.

"It is an attack on democracy . It reminds me of 1975 when the government became dictatorial. This is just like the emergency. This is undemocratic," BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.

Javadekar was reacting to police forcibly removing Ramdev and his supporters from the sprawling Ramlila Ground a little after Saturday midnight.

As police asked the protesters to clear the area, some of Ramdev supporters armed themselves with iron rods, fire extinguishers and what appeared to be baseball bats. Some even threw stones at police.

The police used tear gas shells and canes to disperse thousands of the yoga guru's supporters to end the indefinite hunger strike he had launched less than 24 hours ago.

Javadekar criticised the way the government "mishandled the incident" saying it was "barbaric and we condemn that".

"It was Maran who started what is today known as the 2G scam" -P.A.C Chairman

Lucknow: Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman Murli Manohar Joshi has told that he too had suggested a probe into Dayanidhi Maran's alleged role in the 2G scam in his report to the Prime Minister.

"It was Maran who started what is today known as the 2G scam. It was on his instance that the power to allocate spectrum was taken away from the Group of Ministers and given to Department of Telecom. His role should be probed and this has been mentioned in the PAC report," Mr Joshi said.

Mr Maran, the Textiles Minister and a senior leader of the DMK, was Minister for Communications and Technology from June 2004 to May 2007.

The allegation against Maran is that Aircel, previously denied a telecom licence for over two years between 2006-08, was finally given one after its owners changed hands to Malaysia-based Maxis in 2008. The charge is that Mr Maran cleared the decks only after a sister company of Maxis invested Rs. 800 crore in the Maran family-owned Sun TV, which the BJP calls a conflict of interest.

But the former Telecom Minister denied all allegations. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Mr Maran said, "I own no shares or any interest in Sun Direct TV or Astro. I was not even a minister when Astro invested in Sun Direct TV." Mr Maran met Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal before he issued the statement.

His party DMK has also backed him. Yesterday, it lashed out at Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa for demanding Maran's resignation over the 2G spectrum scam.
