KOLKATA: The possibility of a tie-up between the Congress and Trinamool Congress for the coming Lok Sabha elections to take on the Left Front in West Bengal, was explored during talks between foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee and TC chief Mamata Banerjee.
"Pranabda and Mamata had a telephonic talk yesterday on possible seat-adjustments between the two parties in West Bengal for the coming Lok Sabha elections. There is likely to be further talks between them in New Delhi shortly," a senior PCC leader, preferring anonymity, said here.
However, he did not give further details of the telephonic talk between the two leaders.
This was the second time that talks on the issue were held between the two leaders since January three when they had reportedly discussed the same matter.
About a possiblity of tie-up between the two parties, state Congress working president Pradip Bhattacherjee said, "It is true that seat-adjustment is a strong desire of anti-CPM voters.
"But one stumbling block is that the Trinamool Congres chief has not yet snapped ties with the NDA though she has spoken about maintaining distance with the BJP, he said.
Meanwhile, WB CLP chief Manas Bhunia who led a party delegation to meet the high command also discussed the alliance issue with Mukherjee in New Delhi on Tuesday night.
"We are not against an alliance, but we want it to be forged on honourable terms," he told PTI from Delhi.
He said the delegation met Ahmed Patel, political secretary to the Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Wednesday and communicated their views on the issue.
