COLOMBO, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- The visiting Indian foreign secretary Shiv Shankar Menon met with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse on Saturday.
During the meeting, Sri Lankan president apprised the Indian official on the Indian government's humanitarian effort of liberating the Tamil minority civilians from the clutches of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels and rehabilitation of those who had taken up arms.
The president also briefed Menon on the current economic and political developments in the country.
Menon is on a 2-day visit to Sri Lanka and had meetings with main opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and minority Tamil party leaders.
Menon handed over to the Sri Lankan government a consignment of medicine on Friday, as part of its efforts of meeting humanitarian needs of the civilian population in the northern province.
India provided Sri Lanka with 1,700 tons of essential items in November for the internally displaced people in the north affected by ongoing military operations against the Tamil Tiger rebels.
